Installing in an attic space

Installing in an attic space

Radiant barrier insulation is often installed in attics, either stapled to the roof rafters or directly to the roof decking.

Most Attics Can Be Completed in a Single Weekend

✔ Basic tools only

✔ No special training required

✔ No protective clothing needed

✔ DIY-friendly installation

We don't recommend installing radiant barriers over the attic floor. If you must, make sure there is sufficient air flow in the attic. This will help prevent condensation from forming under the radiant barrier on the attic floor. Also, over time, dust accumulation can decrease the effectiveness of a radiant barrier placed on the attic floor.

FAQ

A radiant barrier is a highly reflective material that is installed in buildings to reduce heat transfer and increase energy efficiency. It is usually installed in the attic, stapled to the underside of the roof rafters, to reflect heat away from the rooms below.

When installed in the attic, a radiant barrier reflects radiant heat away from the rooms below helping keep the indoors cooler in the summer and increasing heating efficiency in the winter. This leads lead to lower energy costs because heating and air conditioning systems don't have to work as hard to maintain comfortable temperatures.

Radiant barriers can lower attic temperatures by up to 30+ degrees in hot summer months.

The most effective way to install a radiant barrier in an attic space is stapled to the underside of the roof rafters and on gable walls in an attic space.

No. Studies have shown that radiant barrier only raises the temperature of the shingles by 2-5 degrees Fahrenheit. Given that the temperature of roofing shingles on a sunny day is between 160° and 190° F, this 2-5 degree increase is negligible.

Roofing materials manufacturers have stated that the installation of a radiant barrier doesn't void their product warranties.
